Crohn’s disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease that is caused by the chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. Symptoms vary, but often include abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition. Inflammation caused by CD can involve different areas of the gastrointestinal tract (from the mouth to the anus), but most commonly affects the lower part of the small intestine, including the terminal ileum and ascending colon. In CD, swelling and scar tissue can lead to constriction of the intestine. CD is a chronic debilitating disease that may lead to life-threatening complications. Currently there is no permanent pharmacological or surgical cure 1.
